Sad news in our house

Our house is reeling from some bad news.

Our cat Cheerios has been acting very lethargic. At first I thought the reason she spent so much time sleeping on the kitchen chair was because it was a cold winter, and the chair was near the heat. She still looked the same. Then I happened to pick her up and she was so light. I weighed her and she was down to 7.5 lbs from her usual 11. Then I knew something was wrong.

We took her to the vet on Wednesday. The doctor said her white blood cell count was the highest she has ever seen on any animal. They did further testing and have concluded she has Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). There is no cure for feline infectious peritonitis. Mortality is high, close to 100 percent.

This news alone has been difficult. But it gets worse.

The virus is transmitted through cat box and saliva (water & food bowls). Though we have more than one of each, all our cats use all that are available. To try to quarantine Cheerios from our other two cats at this point is like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped.

Today I had a talk with our Vet, and was told that she expects our other two cats to come down with FIP too. And that after all our cats have died from this disease, we are to throw out all food and water dishes and the cat boxes, and we should not get another cat for at least six months - the virus is that strong.

What an awful prospect, to think of watching the slow demise of all of our beloved pets.

This is a very sad household this evening.

I'm so sorry, Kathy! :-(

Having lost a pet in the last year, I know how hard it is. But if I had lost ALL of them and then faced 6 months with no pets...well, I just don't know how I would handle it. I hope that you find the strength you need to deal with what's coming.

Peace - D

Oh my gosh, what sad news. I've never heard of that disease but I can't imagine how hard this is. Ugh, pet's are so close to our heart.

This is TERRIBLE!!! I feel your pain. I lost the sister to my Oscar Snuggles a couple of years ago and still it hurts my heart. I KNOW you are devistated. I'll pray for you. Our fur babies leave foot prints on our hearts forever.

Hugs to you. I, like most, am very attached to my pets. I can't imagine how hard this must be for all of you. More hugs.

hey Kathy, I've finally surfaced and am remembering you have a blog so wanted to look. I'm so sorry about your kitties. That's terrible news. We lost Felix April 3rd from Feline leukemia - he was 12 and we'd had him vaccinated when he was little, but the vet said he showed signs of it anyway. It was very traumatic. Daryl was gone and I had to deal with it alone. :-( My heart's going out to you. Pets are our children. Only pet people really get it. julie

So sorry to hear that, Miss Kathy. I haven't visited in a while and just found your kind e-mail the other day -- you responded to my question about your gorgeous banner, and I don't check that e-mail address very often, so I didn't respond, sorry.

I hope luck is on your side with the other kitties, as they are such important members of our families.

Best wishes,

Laurie @ Foolery
